Anne Hathaway’s family drama “Rachel Getting Married,” the border-smuggling tale “Frozen River” and the Deep South saga “Ballast” lead the nominees for the Spirit Awards withsix nominations each, including best picture.

Other best-picture nominees announced Tuesday: Michelle Williams’ down-on-her-luck drama, “Wendy and Lucy,” and Mickey Rourke’s broken-down athlete tale “The Wrestler.”

‘Four Christmases’ Celebrates With $31.7M Box Office

LOS ANGELES, Calif.

Thanksgiving weekend movie crowds gobbled up the Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn holiday comedy “Four Christmases,” which debuted at No. 1 with $31.7 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Warner Bros. release, featuring Witherspoon and Vaughn as a couple suffering through four separate family holiday gatherings, raised its total to $46.7 million since opening Wednesday to get a head start on the long weekend.

NEW YORK, NY

Madonna’s awakening to the crisis in Malawi — an impoverished African nation where one million children are orphaned by AIDS — had many consequences.

She adopted one of those orphans, her 3-year-old son David. She is building a school there.

And she has told Malawi’s harrowing story in her documentary, “I Am Because We Are.” With an audience thus far limited to isolated theater screenings, it will be screened for everyone with its TV premiere on Sundance Channel at 9 p.m. EST Monday (World AIDS Day).

“Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke is in talks to direct “New Moon,” the just-greenlit sequel of the vampire box office hit, a source close to the negotiations told Access Hollywood.

The vampire drama bit into a $69.6 million opening last weekend, the biggest ever debut for a female director.

SAG To Vote On Strike In December

LOS ANGELES, Calif.

The Screen Actors Guild says it will hold its strike vote next month.

President Alan Rosenberg made the announcement in an e-mail sent to members on Wednesday, and asked them to give the guild’s board the authority to call a strike “only if it becomes absolutely necessary.”

The vote could take more than a month and requires 75 percent approval to pass.

The hottest Oscar after-party in town is back — only smaller.

Vanity Fair says its annual Academy Awards party is returning for next year’s Oscar night on Feb. 22. The magazine’s 2008 bash was canceled in support of the Hollywood writers’ strike.
