LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Neil Patrick Harris will host the 2009 Emmy Awards, multiple sources have confirmed to Access Hollywood.

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter were the first outlets to report that the “How I Met Your Mother” star, who recently hosted the 2009 Tony Awards, was negotiating to MC the ceremony.

The 61st Annual Emmy Awards will air on September 20 on CBS – the night before Neil’s “How I Met Your Mother” launches its new season on the network. The Tonys aired on CBS as well.

Last year’s Emmys were widely criticized for the lackluster results stemming from the decision to rotate the hosting position between five reality hosts, all nominated in the Best Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Show category — Tom Bergeron, Jeff Probst, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Ryan Seacrest.

Neil recently booked two new feature films – the indie ensemble “The Best and the Brightest” (co-starring Bonnie Somerville and Amy Sedaris, which he is currently shooting in Philadelphia) and a supporting role in CBS Films’ “Beastly” (co-starring Vanessa Hudgens and Mary-Kate Olsen).
