Today on Access Hollywood Live’s “New Year, New You” series, Billy Bush and Kit Hoover welcome Dr. Neal Barnard, President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and author of “21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart” to discuss the benefits of a plant-based diet.

Welcome back to "Access Hollywood live." Beyonce and jay Z recently went vegan to improve their overall health. For our "New year, new you" series, we're going to discuss the weight loss benefits of a plant-based diet. Looking good right there. Dr. Barnard with with physicians spore responsible medicine and author of the "Weight loss kick-start and" is here with tibz on how to get started here. So, what is straight up the benefits of the vegan -- can we call it vegan, plant-based? Same thing, right? You can call it vegan. For many people, it sounds out there, so they'll say plant-based, but the idea is that you're really powering up vegetables, fruits, whole grains, getting the meats and cheeses out of the diet, and number one, we see people who have really wanted to lose weight, I'm talking about 50 pounds, 100 pounds, a lot of weight, comes right off. But what if you only want to knock off 15? Works just as great for you, too. Your energy goes way, way up, and all the issues like cholesterol, blood pressure, they melt away. Easier than any other diet. Should kids do this or no? Yes, absolutely. Run, don't walk. Why? Because kids are set up for obesity nowadays, and Y're not eating their vegetables and fruits. If you find easy way to puts it into their routine, you'll have the healthiest kids on the block. Why is it that cheese and bacon and things -- I love cheese. Bacon. These are things that are so good. Why can't this taste like bacon? Then I'll eat them like crazy. Well, cheese is loaded with fat. It's got a little bit of salt in it. That's why people tend to like it, but two issues. First of all, it's about 70% fat, which is -- you know what that does to the waistline. And a lot of folks who are in the arts get away from dairy products because it affects their voice, gives them that little, you know what I'm talking about. When people get away from dairy, they feel so good. I've got to get going on this. How do we start? Start with breakfast. A lot of people say I don't have a huge amount of time, so I have made a green smoothie here, and it's a banana. You crush it up with a little ice in a blender. I've got some spinach, which has the beta carotene, the chlorophyll, the energy there. And the sweetness comes from pineapple and some grapes. Can we do the green drink every morning? Every morning. We make one here. So, we're already there on breakfast. Okay, great. If you wanted to do -- Wow, yours is good because it's sweet, the pineapple. Ours isn't as sweet. Let's get to lunch. We don't have banana in ours. Actually, yours is kind of weak. We go very strong. Kit and I go -- We go Cale, broccoli -- If you want to do waffles and pancakes and veggie bacon, that's perfectly fine, too. Lunchtime, I've got a couscous salad. That's a whole grain couscous, and I've got zippy yam in there. That will power you up. Virtually no fat, very high-energy food. The colors are the antioxidants. When you see colors, that's good. Yeah. The more colors -- Yams. I've got to get into the yams. I'm not a big yam -- Oh, delicious. What is this? This is bean. These are veggie fajitas. So there are black beans in there, peppers. No fat, high-energy, lots of healthy protein, but you're not going to have the fat and cholesterol. So, there's no cheese or sour cream, but I could hit it up with salsa, right? All the salsa you want. You could smother it in salsa and be safe. These recipes are at accesshollywoodlive.com. with her headphones on? Okay, is there a little sorbet? It's got to be sorbet. It is a sorbet. This is my mango lime sorbet. Yum, doctor. Very, very quick, very easy to make, and I've sweetened it with a little agave. Okay. You say run, don't walk, to this diet, but is that really possible? Can't we just take one step and let people, like, maybe just fix lunch? We fixed breakfast -- Everybody's different. There's somebody like beyonce and jay Z, they wanted to jump in. And so, they were working with our coach, Margo borges, and they said, let's just really do this solid for three weeks, and the weight melted off, their energy went up and they said, this is it. But you can go into it gradually if you want to, have more of these meals and then the more you do, the better you're going to love it. I've got to say, I feel better already, doc! Everybody enjoy that, except the guy that owns the steakhouse.
