Another year, another attempted comeback for Britney Spears at the MTV “Video Music Awards.”
The rebounding pop queen is hoping to complete a do-over of sorts as she kicks off Sunday’s awards ceremony, not with a performance, but with an appearance MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler has described as “fun and unexpected.”
If she manages to pull it off, Spears — who is up for three awards, including video of the year for “Piece of Me” — will come away with the most improved award after bombing in spectacular fashion at last year’s festivities in Las Vegas.

The Nicolas Cage action-thriller “Bangkok Dangerous” needed just $7.8 million to take the top spot at the box office in what was the slowest movie weekend in five years, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The total weekend box office gross was expected to reach just $66 million, slightly less than the $66.7 million reported for the same weekend in September 2003.

Tommy Lee Jones is suing the makers of “No Country for Old Men” for more than $10 million that the Oscar-winning actor claims he is owed for starring in the 2007 hit crime thriller.
The lawsuit against Paramount Pictures claims that Jones was promised “significant box-office bonuses” and other compensation depending on the success of the film, which went on to make more than $160 million.
