Nick Lachey is beaming about his recent engagement to fiancee Vanessa Minnillo.

“I think that we have a great relationship. The good thing about our situation is that we kind of took our time with it. We’ve been together four and half years, so it’s just, the right thing at the right time for us,” Nick told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Access Hollywood Live on Monday, when asked about his November engagement to his longtime girlfriend.

The pair began dating in 2006 (in the wake of Nick’s highly-publicized divorce from his first wife, Jessica Simpson), after Vanessa starred in the former 98 Degrees singer’s music video for “What’s Left Of Me.” The couple split in June 2009, but rekindled their romance in August (2009? Or 2010?) – a break that Nick said was beneficial for them.

“We took a break for a little while there… I think that’s a healthy thing sometimes, when you’re kind of going through the growing process,” Nick continued. “The way I’ve always looked at it is, if you come out on the other side and you’ve learned something and you can kind of apply it to the next time that situation comes up, then you’re growing as a couple, and that’s what exciting to me. If you continue to grow as a couple, then you’re in good shape.”

As for popping the question, Nick waited for the right moment to ask for his future bride’s hand.

“We had a great evening, a great day, it just seemed like the right time,” he told Billy and Kit. “It was a romantic moment, a perfect moment, and she said, ‘Yes,’ so that was the most important part.”

The pair have not yet revealed when they plan to wed, but the host of NBC’s “The Sing-Off” is sure of one wedding day detail.

“I think I’ll leave the singing to someone else,” Nick said.
