LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Jessica Simpson appeared gorgeous over the weekend at the Operation Smile event where her family was honored for their contributions to the organization which helps children around the world with cleft palettes, but the star has had very little to smile about recently. She split with Cowboy’s quarterback Tony Romo over the summer, and most recently, lost her beloved dog Daisy to a coyote.

Now, in a new interview with Access Hollywood, Nick Lachey opens up about how losing Daisy affected him, as well.

“I think a lot of people forget that Daisy was my dog too — for years,” Nick said.

The former “Newlyweds” star admits his thoughts have been with his ex-wife, Jessica, over the last few weeks after learning about Daisy’s fate.

“I didn’t reach out to her,” he said. “I’m sure she was upset… I was upset… It was sad to hear that happened, but it’s part of the cycle of life.”

Today, Nick is getting on with things, promoting his new reverse auction Web site, Winnit.com, with a portion of the proceeds going to Feeding America.

“The way it works is that instead of the highest bidder gets the item, when the auction clock expires the person with the lowest unique big gets the item,” Nick explained. “You see iPods go for 67 cents… Macbook computers for 37 cents.”

And Nick is going on an 11-city tour on a luxury bus to promote the site.

“No teddy bear,” he said of his bedfellows in his small sleeping space on the bus. “Just a bottle of water.”
