HOLLYWOOD, Calif. --
Fresh off a painful divorce with rock super group Velvet Revolver and reunion shows with his extremely popular 90’s band Stone Temple Pilots, lead signer Scott Weiland is releasing his second solo record titled “Happy (In Golashes).”
The disc finds Scott collaborating at times with a Gwen-less No Doubt (guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young), as well as producer Steve Albini, who’s famous for helming albums by The Pixies, The Breeders, and Nirvana, to name a few.
Admittedly, I wasn’t a huge fan of the Stone Temple Pilots’ testosterone fueled rock from the get-go, but I grew to really like some of their later more adventurous work.
“Paralysis,” the first single from “Happy,” finds Scott in the latter territory. The song is adventurous and experimental sounding, with swirling, chiming guitars building up to a staccato chorus with Scott’s voice sounding very “Low”-era David Bowie.
The track is catchy and grown-up, yet in no way cookie-cutter pop rock. I’ll be the first to go out on a limb and say that it’s his best work since Stone Temple Pilots 1996 disc “Tiny Music.”
After his recent misstep (in my opinion) that was Velvet Revolver, I think Mr. Weiland is finally headed in the right direction.
