Lindsay Lohan is in the midst of rebuilding her career following numerous appearances in court, time spent behind bars and multiple rehab stints, but the actress has many people in her corner – including Oprah Winfrey.
Oprah spoke to Access Hollywood’s Michelle Beadle at the junket for “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” about her upcoming OWN interview with the troubled actress, where she dispelled the idea that she was acting as a mentor to Lindsay.
“I know it’s been described as publicly mentoring. I did an interview with her,” she said of the upcoming “Oprah’s Next Chapter” episode with “The Canyons” star.
Following the sitdown, Oprah confided in Lindsay that she was rooting for her to succeed.
“I had a real conversation with her afterwards, saying, ‘Look, the reason why I’m doing this, obviously it’s going to be on television, and obviously you chose to say yes, or wanted to do this for your reasons, obviously you want people to watch this, but in the end, it’s about your life. I want you to win,’” Oprah explained. “That’s what I said to her in that interview, ‘I want you to win.’”
Oprah was quick to defend her choice to interview the headline-maker.
“All the people who take issue [and say,] ‘Why are you [interviewing] her?’ I think she’s an interesting figure of our culture right now, " Oprah told Access. “I think that lots of people make mistakes in their lives. We, as human beings, I think, cannot stand in judgment of how many chances you get. I think the arc of trying to reorganize, reshape and rebuild your career and your life… it’s a really interesting story, if you can pull that off.”
But does Oprah believe that Lindsay can pull off a life makeover?
“I absolutely think it’s possible for her to do that, and I want her to win,” she told Access. “So, I’m not a mentor as much as I’m here to tell the story, and to help her tell the story.”
Lindsay’s episode of “Oprah’s Next Chapter” will air on OWN on Sunday, August 18, at 9 PM ET. “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” opens on August 16.
