MUMBAI, India --
Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, two of the child actors from the 2009 Best Picture winner “Slumdog Millionaire,” have had a non-stop celebration during their time in Hollywood this past week, and the good news will continue when they return home to Mumbai, India.
The two young actors will receive new homes, Reuters reported.
“These two children have brought laurels to the country, and we have been told that they live in slums, which cannot even be classified as housing,” said Gautam Chatterjee, head of the state-run Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.
In addition to new homes, “Slumdog” director Danny Boyle said the children were paid more than the local wage during filming and a fund has been set up for the children to pay for their education, medical emergency expenses and “basic living costs.”
On Sunday, “Slumdog Millionaire” swept the 81st Annual Academy Awards taking home eight of 10 Oscars for which it was nominated.
