NBC’s chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel said Tuesday he and members of his network crew escaped unharmed after five days of captivity in Syria, where more than a dozen pro-regime gunmen dragged them from their car, killed one of their rebel escorts and subjected them to mock executions.

CBS News Pioneer & ‘60 Minutes’ Creator Don Hewitt Dies At 86

NEW YORK, N.Y.

Don Hewitt, the CBS Newsman who invented “60 Minutes” and produced the popular newsmagazine for 36 years, died Wednesday. He was 86.

He died of pancreatic cancer at his Bridgehampton home, CBS said. His death came month after that of fellow CBS legend Walter Cronkite.

NBC is keeping the lights on for “Friday Night Lights.”

A person close to the production said Monday that it has been renewed for two more 13-episode runs and will be on the air through the 2010-11 season. The person, who lacked authorization to discuss NBC’s decision, spoke on condition of anonymity.
