LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- “Project Runway” finalists Andy South, Gretchen Jones and Mondo Guerra battled for fashion supremacy on Thursday’s finale – but who was the last designer left standing?
Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and guest judge Jessica Simpson battled it out following the contestants’ runway show at New York City Fashion Week and a surprise winner was selected.
Gretchen, who was known for creating fashion from green and sustainable fabrics, was crowned this season’s couture queen. Nina and Michael praised her contemporary and ready-to-wear style and felt she and eye for future trends. While Heidi and Jessica argued that Mondo brought more excitement and style to the runway. Andy, who placed third, was told his final collection lacked the edginess he had shown during his run on Lifetime series.
“It’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me,” Gretchen said after winning.
Jessica told Gretchen, whose collection was called “Running Through Thunder,” that she and sister Ashlee Simpson-Wentz planned on rocking her looks soon.
The judges weren’t the only ones split on the last night’s win. Many fans of the show hit Twitter slamming the show’s pick.
One popular Tweet last night suggested that Mondo was headed for a career well beyond “Runway,” saying, “Nina: While you put Gretchen in Marie Claire, Anna Wintour will have Mondo in Vogue.”
Another popular Tweet last night was, “If Gretchen’s finger is on the pulse, the body must be a corpse.”
