LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

A public memorial for Michael Jackson will take place next week in Los Angeles, Access Hollywood has learned.

The public celebration of the pop star’s life, which was cut short last week when Jackson died at the age of 50, will be held at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, a source with knowledge on the preparations told Access Hollywood Executive Producer Rob Silverstein.

An exact date, however, for the memorial has not been decided, but it could be held as early as Monday, the source said.

Despite reports that the public ceremony will be a funeral, the source told Silverstein it will actually be a memorial to the King of Pop.
