‘Real Steel,’ ‘Footloose’ Duke It Out For No. 1 Spot At Weekend Box Office

The robot boxers of “Real Steel” and the dancers of “Footloose” are in a tight fight for the box-office title.

According to studio estimates Sunday, the Hugh Jackman tale about machines in the boxing ring took in $16.3 million, which would make it the No. 1 movie for the second-straight weekend.

Boxing robots are the undisputed champions at the weekend box office.

Hugh Jackman’s “Real Steel,” set in a near-future when robot fighters have replaced humans in the ring, debuted at No. 1 with $27.3 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The actor might be best known for playing “X-Men’s” Wolverine (in movies that son Oscar, 11, daughter Ava, 6, have yet to see), but Hugh’s kids are all about giant boxing robots.

SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP, Mich.

Authorities say a helicopter used in the filming of the Hugh Jackman movie “Real Steel” snagged a power line in Michigan, causing a brief power outage and closing a roadway.

Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson told the Huron Daily Tribune of Bad Axe that no injuries were reported after the Sunday evening incident in Huron County’s Sheridan Township, about 90 miles north of Detroit.
