LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Rihanna’s bold, cutting edge style has always stood out on the red carpet. From casual to couture, Rihanna never shies away from inventing — and then re-inventing — her sense of personal style, winning her the title of being an Access Style Star.

Within a single week, Rihanna can span the spectrum of style. At the Pepsi Sugar Bowl Fan Jam, Rihanna performed in an eye-catching, asymmetrical black and white bodysuit. The look couldn’t have been more different to the elegant white Elie Saab gown that she wore to the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, just five days earlier. And who can forget the couture Victor & Rolf architecturally inspired dress in which she walked the red carpet for Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party?

But looking so haute is hard work.

“In the past few months I’ve done a lot of research in the fashion world because I wanted to work with a bunch of designers that are kinda underground, people who aren’t the obvious,” Rihanna told the U.K.’s Grazia. “I found this guy Alexander Voltaire — his stuff is just so amazing, the colors are really beautiful and feminine but the structure is really strong, which I love.”

Rihanna’s many looks start with her hair. Her trademark short crop is continually reinvented with a variety of colors, asymmetrical shapes, and textured styles. Whether she wears it gelled in a Mohawk, curly in a mop, or straight and layered, she’s not afraid to change it up and take risks.

Her style extends to her skin art. The singer recently got a new tattoo that, at first glance, might not read right.

“I did it backwards so I could read it to myself in the mirror,” she explained to Access Hollywood. “It reads, ‘Never a failure, always a lesson,’ and that’s my motto for life,” she said of the new art.

In fact, the Barbados-born singer has a number of tattoos, including a trail of stars on her neck, the word “Shh…” on her index finger and small gun tattoo under her right arm.

Whatever her look, from sexy grunge to stage spectacular, Rihanna’s fashion will always keep her fans guessing.
