NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Catherine Zeta-Jones will join Angela Lansbury in the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music,” the New York Post reported. According to the newspaper, Angela had previously agreed to play Madame Armfeldt in the musical – if another big star would join the cast as her daughter, Desiree.
That star is reportedly Catherine, who showed off her musical chops in her Oscar-winning role as Velma in the 2002 film “Chicago.”
She reportedly joined the “A Little Night Music” cast after a call from Sondheim himself.
However, a rep for the show tells Access that the deal is not yet done. Production spokesperson Heath Schwartz said the news, “is still a rumor at this point and no casting for the musical revival has been confirmed.”
In February, the Post reported that Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter, Natasha Richardson — who died tragically after a skiing accident a month later, in March — had expressed interest in the revival’s roles after performing them at a benefit concert for the Roundabout Theatre Company in January.
The role of Desiree doesn’t include much singing, but Catherine will have the chance to perform one of Sondheim’s most famous songs, “Send In the Clowns.”
While she may be heading for the stage, the star’s still making moves in Hollywood. Up next, Catherine stars in romantic comedy “The Rebound” alongside “The Hangover” star Justin Bartha. The film is due later this year.
