LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

T.R. Knight is leaving “Grey’s Anatomy,” according to a new report.

Sources have told Entertainment Weekly TV columnist Michael Ausiello that ABC, the network which airs “Grey’s,” is releasing the actor from his contract. The decision was made in the last several days, according to the columnist.

Reports emerged in February that Knight and his real-life best friend and “Grey’s” co-star, Katherine Heigl, were leaving the Seattle-based medical drama. A month later, Heigl revealed she wanted to stay on the show, but Knight has remained mum on the subject.

During the Season 5 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” last month, the fate of Knight’s character George O’Malley, was in limbo. O’Malley had been hit by a bus, shortly after signing up for the military, and was undergoing surgery at the hands of his Seattle Grace friends.

He was last seen dressed in his military uniform, waiting as an elevator carrying Heigl’s character, Izzie Stevens, opened in front of him.

Izzie herself was dressed in the ball gown she wore when her husband, Denny Doucette, died at the end of Season 2.

Heigl’s character was also part of “Grey’s” Season 5 cliffhanger. After undergoing surgery for a host of brain tumors, she eventually flat lined. The doctors around her, however, despite a “do not resuscitate” order, were performing life-saving measures to try and bring her back.

Reps for ABC had no comment when contacted by Access Hollywood.

A rep for Knight was not immediately available for comment.
