SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Just call him Prince Charming. “Game of Thrones’” former King in the North, Richard Madden, is playing the prince in Disney’s “Cinderella,” but he’s not quite used to wearing another royal’s shoes just yet.
“Really odd,” Richard told Access Hollywood at Comic-Con last Friday when we asked him how it felt to now be a Disney prince. “I’m like, ‘Surely, not me. Surely, I’m too old. I can’t be!’ Oh, actually, all right. I’m doing it!”
Richard, 27, said the film, which pits him opposite “Downton Abbey’s” Lily James (she’s playing Cinderella), will be fairly faithful to the story readers grew up with.
“Very true to the tale of the story,” he said. “There’s little changes happening now, so I’m not sure where it’s going to go, but it’s the story of Cinderella, we know it and it’s an amazing cast with an outstanding director, so it’s going to be really exciting,” he said. (Kenneth Branagh is directing the project.)
The “Game of Thrones” Red Wedding – Richard’s exit episode – aired back in June on HBO, and the actor confirmed he has now seen it, “a couple of times.”
And, one of the times he watched it was alongside Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) and David Nutter, who directed the episode.
“Myself and Michelle and David Nutter, the director, did the audio commentary for Episode 9 and Michelle hadn’t watched it, so it’s one of those audio commentaries that’s really worth tuning into,” he said of the segment expected on the “GOT” Season 3 Blu-Ray/DVD release. “It’s gonna be special.”
Although filming his exit on “Thrones” left him tearful, Richard said watching the YouTube fan reactions delighted him.
“It made me laugh so much ‘cause there’s so many cameras that are just like shaking with someone laughing at how terribly everyone’s reacting to it,” Richard told Access. “It’s so good. It’s the same thing as when my dad read the books and he threw it across the room and didn’t read it for two weeks. I love it.”
Richard just wrapped filming a new show – “Klondike” – a scripted series heading to Discovery, and with a little time off, he is considering dropping by his old haunt — The “Game of Thrones” set.
“I might try and have a swing by, yeah definitely,” he said. “And I’ve got friends over there as well, anyway. So I might pop over. I’d love to. This is what’s so good about doing things like [Comic-Con] — I get to see all the gang again because we don’t get to see each other very often and we were tight. It’s five years since like the pilot, so I’m gonna miss the gang.”
