LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- She’s the mastermind behind Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The USA,” the girl who was once called “Alien” at school after her skin turned green and the next big British pop sensation that you might not have heard of just yet. That’s all about to change when Jessie J – AccessHollywood.com’s newest Rising Star – performs this weekend on “Saturday Night Live.”
The 22-year-old singer – who fuses pop, R&B and hip-hop – might be new to American audiences, but she’s already written for some of music’s biggest artists on this side of the pond, including the aforementioned Miley, Britney Spears, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake and Alicia Keys. Her latest single, “Price Tag” (See the video, ft. B.o.B. HERE!), is already a worldwide hit, racking up over 23 million views on YouTube. Fellow pop star Selena Gomez even pledged her allegiance to Jessie last weekend when she covered the song during a concert. (See Selena’s cover of “Price Tag,” HERE!). All of this for an artist who hasn’t yet released her first album. Jessie J, born Jessica Ellen Cornish, experienced her fair share of difficulties growing up, which she has been able to channel into her music. The singer recently told Britain’s The Sun that classmates nicknamed her “Alien” after her skin turned green from taking medication to help with her heart condition. At age 11, Jessie was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat and she had a stroke at 18.
A boy she once shared a hospital room with during her childhood, who passed away, inspired the first song she ever penned, “Big White Room.” A live version of the fan-favorite song appears on her upcoming debut album.
“I knew I wanted to write a song about that experience,” she said of the song on her official website. “‘Big White Room’ is my comfort blanket, and I’m so happy that people can personalize the meaning of the song.”
After finding success writing for other artists, Jessie J broke out on her own with two massive singles in the U.K. The first, “Do It Like A Dude,” released on November 18, 2010, hit #2 in the UK (See the video, HERE!). Her second single, the aforementioned “Price Tag,” debuted on January 30 and quickly became her first UK #1 song.
Jessie J’s website describes her as “mix a bit of Rihanna with Gwen Stefani, add the charisma of Pink,” and already has Simon Cowell and Nicki Minaj touting her musical skills.
Variety recently named the singer a “talent to watch in 2011” and NME called her “a future pop siren cut from a different kind of polyester.”
Just like her sense of style, which usually includes mile high heels and her hair in a bob, Jessie J doesn’t plan on holding back.
“I want people to know that I am an unedited version of myself. I plan to expose the good and the bad to show that life is about being ‘Who You Are,’” the openly bisexual singer said on her website.
Jessie J’s debut album, “Who You Are,” drops on March 28 in the UK and April 12 in the U.S. She’ll appear on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” with host Zach Galifianakis, on March 12.
