LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Denzel Washington is ready for the Academy Awards – and his money is on Viola Davis for Best Actress.
“I think so, I think so!” Denzel told Access Hollywood when asked if he thinks Viola will take home the coveted statue, at the premiere of his new action flick, “Safe House,” in New York City on Tuesday.
The 57-year-old actor starred alongside Viola in the Broadway revival of “Fences” and said she was already packing on the pounds for her role as “The Help’s” Aibileen Clark as their play drew to its close.
“You know what, when we finished ‘Fences’ that Sunday, July 11th, [Viola] went right to Mississippi [to shoot],” Denzel told Access. “In fact, the last couple of weeks of ‘Fences’ she started eating to put on weight for ‘The Help.’
“She was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to put on this weight to play this maid,’” he added. “Now, a year a half later, she’s taking the weight off to put on that dress!”
As for Denzel’s latest role, the Oscar winner said his character is not exactly someone you’d want to invite over for dinner.
“I snap necks,” he told Access of his “Safe House” character, Tobin Frost. “He’s a sociopath, he’s a murderer, he’s a traitor, he’s a cheater, he’s a liar.
“He has no conscious, no remorse — it’s comedy!” he added, jokingly.
Watch Denzel kick butt alongside Ryan Reynolds and Vera Farmiga in “Safe House” – in theaters on Friday.
The 84th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, February 26, on ABC at 7 PM ET and 4 PM PT.
