BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Seth Meyers recently announced his engagement to Alexi Ashe, but summer promotion for his new animated series “The Awesomes,” premiering today on Hulu, has meant he’s had to skirt some of the wedding planning.
“Nothing like telling your fiancee, ‘I’d love to do a cake tasting, but I have to go to Comic-Con,’” Seth laughed on Wednesday at the Hulu portion of the Television Critics Association in Beverly Hills.
“The Awesomes,” from Seth and co-creator Michael Shoemaker (“Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”) is the tale of what happens when the cream of the crop of superheroes leave their super team, and Professor Doctor Awesome (voiced by Seth) has to recruit less than stellar superheroes to take their place.
With a full slate on his plate, including a bit longer on the “Weekend Update” anchor desk on “Saturday Night Live,” and prepping to take over “Late Night,” in addition to “The Awesomes,” the star has a lot going on.
“It’s the very early stages on ‘Late Night.’ More than anything else, we’re staffing. I think we both know from the shows we’ve worked on how important it is to put together a strong staff of writers, unique voices. So that’s been a really fun process of it, as well,” Seth said, when one reporter asked him to break down his busy schedule.
“I’ll go back to ‘SNL’ in the fall and work there up until ‘Late Night,’” he continued. “The nice thing about ‘The Awesomes’ now is we’re pretty much through the work on it, thankfully, because there’s obviously going to be less and less time.”
Seth and Michael recruited many pals to voice the characters in their Hulu original animated series, including Kenan Thompson, Bobby Moynihan, Taran Killam and Bill Hader. Seth said recruiting his “SNL” pals was easy because they did some of the recording in the same building as their NBC sketch comedy.
“It’s really great at ‘SNL’ because you’re sort of in this constant creative process within the show where you sort of go to somebody’s office and you’re like, ‘Hey, I need you to do this part in a sketch.’ We were kind of like doing that for the show where you would like knock on Kenan’s door and say, ‘Can you come down to the 8th floor and record like 50 lines for us?’” he explained. “The great thing about working with the ‘SNL’ cast for voice stuff, as with anything else, is they’re so quick to get what you’re asking them to do.”
“The Awesomes” premieres today on Hulu.
