LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Following the showdown between Miss California Carrie Prejean and Perez Hilton about same-sex marriage at the 2009 Miss USA Pageant on Sunday, the celebrity blogger posed the same question to his celebrity pals via Twitter and received a flood of support.
“Love is love!” Britney Spears wrote on her Twitter responding to Perez. “People should be able to do whatever makes them happy!”
“The Hills” star Heidi Montag, who is an outspoken Christian, also championed same-sex marriage on her Twitter.
“God says in the bible that we should love our neighbor and he created us all as equals. I know in my heart that gays and lesbians should have the same government rights that Spencer and I will when we get married,” Heidi wrote on Tuesday. “So, yes, this blonde Christian believes in gay marriage and I hope to one day go to YOUR wedding, Perez!!!”
Adding, “God says not to judge and I would never try to judge ANYONE! Nor should our “free” country.”
Miley also chimed in on the topic, responding to Perez with a shout out for Heidi’s comment, writing, “i second that!!! wow heidi is smart!!! shes amazing.”
During an interview on Tuesday with FOX News’ Neil Cavuto, Carrie said she believes her answer to the same-sex marriage question cost her the crown.
Adding, “I didn’t think a question that controversial would be asked at Miss USA.”
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, during the show, Perez asked Carrie, “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?”
“Well, I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. Um, we live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and in, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman,” Carrie said to a mix of boos and applause. “No offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think that it should be between a man and a woman.”
On Tuesday, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued a statement saying Carrie’s answer to the same-sex marriage question was “inaccurate.”
“Much of the media’s coverage of this story seems to be missing the main point, which is that what Prejean said is simply inaccurate. Contrary to Prejean’s claim that people can choose who they want to marry, loving, committed gay and lesbian couples are in fact denied that choice in all but a few states, and all such couples are also denied the federal security and protections that come with marriage,” Neil G. Giuliano, president of GLAAD, said in a statement released to Access. “America should in fact be a place where all people – gay and straight – can choose to marry the person they love, but that choice continues to be denied to loving, committed gay couples. GLAAD urges media covering the controversy to focus attention on real gay and lesbian couples who, because they continue to be excluded from marriage, are prevented from being able to take care of and be responsible for each other.”
On Monday, Carrie spoke to Billy Bush in an interview for “The Billy Bush Show” and Access Hollywood where she revealed that her sister, though not gay herself, is a gay rights activist in the Air Force.
“She supports gay people, she supports gay marriage. My beliefs have nothing to do with my sister or my mom, or whatever. She was just in my hotel room and she said, ‘Sis, I’m not offended by anything that you said,” Carrie told Billy.
“We have two different opinions and I love you because of it. I love you because you stood up for what was right, and it’s not a matter of being gay or not gay, it’s a matter of you competing for Miss USA and getting a question and answering it to the best of your ability.
