Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson Named Music’s Greenest Artists
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Surfy pop-rocker Jack Johnson has netted the top spot in a new poll ranking musical artists and their contributions to the environment.
Johnson took the top spot in Billboard’s Music Goes Green list for a host of reasons, including his eco-friendly recording studio, built in his own home.
According to Billboard, the studio is insulated by old jean material, and fueled somewhat by solar panels. And it isn’t just used by Jack. Mason Jennings and New York hipster rockers Vampire Weekend have also used the environmentally friendly facility.
In addition to the studio, Johnson makes his jaunts around the world better for the planet thanks to his "Enviro-Rider." According to Billboard, his rider (a list of requests by the artist) asks venues the “Bubble Toes” singer plays, to cut down on their waste and recycle.
Willie Nelson slips into the second slot, for having his own biodiesel fuel, named BioWillie. He is also opening a green truck stop – Willie’s Place, in Carl’s Corner, Texas, which will allow truckers to obtain between 5 percent and 85 percent of biofuel.
Johnson’s sometimes tour buddies, the Dave Matthews Band, were ranked fourth for offsetting the CO2 emissions for their entire summer tour, through their association with environmental nonprofit outlet Reverb and buying renewable energy credits from Native Energy, Billboard reported.
Also on the list? Mexican rockers Mana who took the third slot, Scottish singer KT Tunstall, who came in at number five and Pearl Jam, who was listed sixth.
The full list of music’s greenest stars as ranked by Billboard are:
1. Jack Johnson
2. Willie Nelson
3. Mana
4. Dave Matthews Band
5. KT Tunstall
6. Pearl Jam
7. Serj Tankian
8. Radiohead
9. Missy Higgins
10. The Roots
