LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Victoria Beckham may be setting up a rivalry with Simon Cowell when she sits down at the “American Idol” judges’ table today as a guest judge for auditions in Denver.
“He is the only man in the music industry who turned down the Spice Girls and said we would never work,” the former Posh Spice said in an interview on “On-Air With Ryan Seacrest” on Friday morning.
With the news that Paula Abdul is leaving the show, Victoria will be replacing her for at least one episode, a rep for the star confirmed to Access Hollywood. She and Ryan went on-air live from Denver, where auditions for Season 9 kick off.
And Victoria said she’s “beyond excited” to be a part of the show after years as a fan.
“When I got the phone call, I just couldn’t believe it. I feel like I’ve got the best job that there is,” she said. “I come to the shows with the kids and [husband] David [Beckham] loves the show so, it’s just great. I’m going to try hard to pout and try not to shatter that illusion that I’m a moody cow, but I’m just so happy.”
She added that she’s hoping for the best for Paula, who told The Associated Press on Thursday that “there are so many wonderful things that are being offered to me.”
“I hope she does something that’s bigger and better,” Victoria said. “I’m a big fan of Paula’s, I always have been, of her music. She’s going to be great at whatever she does.”
As for joining Kara DioGuardi at the judge’s table, Victoria said she’s “a girl’s girl.”
“I bumped into [Kara] at the airport,” she said. “She seems very girly, which is what I like. We were talking about fashion, music.”
But as a judge, Victoria said she hopes to take on Paula’s role of encouraging contestants – and sparring with Simon.
“I want to be nice to people,” she said. “I know how it feels to be judged and when nerves really get the better of you. I don’t want to shatter anybody’s dream.”
