NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The story of “Gossip Girl’s” Lily and Rufus’ journey from LA’s Sunset Strip in the ‘80s to NYC’s present day Upper East Side will continue to remain a mystery as The CW has nixed plans for a spin-off of the popular teen drama.
On Thursday, The CW announced their 2009-2010 season and the network confirmed the news which had been circulating for awhile when they left the planned spin-off, starring Brittany Snow as a young Lily Rhodes, off the schedule.
Fans did get a glimpse into what the series might have looked like on “Gossip Girl’s” May 11 episode, with a flashback storyline about a teenage Lily running away from her posh Santa Barbara boarding school to live with her sister (played by Krysten Ritter) in LA. The flashback story served as a backdoor pilot for the nixed show.
The 1980s might not be coming to The CW, but Tuesday nights will sure feel like the ‘90s with the debut of the “Melrose Place” reboot with Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and original series stars Laura Leighton and Thomas Calabro. “Melrose” will air after “90210.”
On Wednesday, it’s model-mania with the return of Tyra Banks’ “America’s Next Top Model” and the new Ashton Kutcher-produced series, “The Beautiful Life,” about the cutthroat world of high fashion with Mischa Barton and Corbin Bleu.
Thursday night will bare its fangs with new series, “The Vampire Diaries,” about two vampire brothers fighting for the soul of one girl and the return of “Supernatural.”
Also returning to The CW, “Smallville” moves to a new slot on Friday night, and “One Tree Hill” stays on Mondays following “Gossip Girl.”
