LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

“They completely took off all my labels on my dry shampoo,” cried Heidi Montag Pratt on “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” after another contestant took her prized product.

Yes, she was literally in tears and spent half of the episode spraying dry shampoo in her hair. (Even THAT couldn’t fix her humidity-ravaged hair!)

I myself have been obsessed with dry shampoo for years - buying Klorane Dry Shampoo in French pharmacies and bringing it back to the states.

But several people in our office had never heard of dry shampoo until Heidi’s meltdown.

Celebrity hairstylist Christine Symonds of Warren-Tricomi Los Angeles (who works with Lauren Conrad) gives us the dry shampoo 411.

WHAT IT IS:

“Dry shampoo is a staple in the hair styling community. It can get you out of all sorts of problems,” Christine reveals. “My favorite is Klorane’s Dry Shampoo Spray and Unite 7 Seconds Dry Shampoo Spray (which is translucent). Whether or not I’m using it to soak up oil in second day hair or add body to limp lifeless hair it is always the first step in my styling process. It’s also very versatile - it can be used on extensions, is great for color treated hair to extend the life of color since you don’t have to wash as frequently and is amazing for sick or hospital patients who can’t wash their hair.”

HOW TO DO:

“A lot of my clients like the look of second day hair but can’t stand the oily roots,” Christine says. “A quick fix is to take 1 inch sections of hair, hold the section up and spray dry shampoo about 5 inches away from root. Continue all over your head. Be careful not to hold the can too close to the root otherwise you will get white powder residue on hair. After you spray roots take your fingers and massage into scalp to disperse powder and rub in any residue left on hair.”

OTHER DRY OPTIONS:

“I prefer the spray, but you can also find the product in a loose powder.” According to Christine, “Its a bit more messy and more likely to leave residue. If you’re in a crunch and don’t have dry shampoo handy you can use baby powder or oil absorbing blotting papers used for your face. Be aware to use baby powder sparingly, especially if you have darker colored hair. Baby powder is most effective on blondes. Make sure to put baby powder in your hand first and then distribute and not to dump directly from bottle. It will be too much.”
