Surfer Bethany Hamilton's Mission To Inspire Young Girls

Bethany Hamilton’s remarkable survival story of returning to professional surfing after losing her arm in a horrific shark attack is an inspiration for millions. Bethany chats with Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Access Hollywood Live about her goal to empower teen girls with her new book, “Body and Soul.” What does she hope young girls will learn from her book? “Body and Soul: a Girl’s Guide to a Fit, Fun and Fabulous Life” is available now.

My growing body is growing. Stephanie Hamilton. One that's played out. We all followed. It does not stop her from becoming great inspiration to all. At 13 she lost her arm in a shark attack. That doesn't stop her from becoming a pro surfer. I've seen the movie 20 times. She's fit and fabulous with her new book "Body and soul." Here's a question I wanted to ask you. Are you related to the other body surfer laird Hamilton? I am not but we're neighbors. Your first win in almost a decade. You can do it. Why now? Why do you think this win happened now? You know, competitive surfing is so hard to be consistent with. I guess working my butt off. I don't know. The pipeline and I survive. There's solve mushy waves in California, for example. I don't know. I'm from Hawaii and the waves are so different. It felt good to win, yeah. How much harder is it to hop up on your surfboard to go from lying down with one arm now? I guess part of my reason for writing "Body and soul" is my fitness aspect of being a professional athlete and working hard at that and having to put the extra effort with one arm and being able to stand up on the board. Yeah, I guess working hard and -- I did it a little differently. I put my hand in the center of the board versus the side of the board like most people. I saw the movie too. Dennis Quaid, your father in the movie, built something on the board? That's true. My dad came up with a handle on the board so when you're duck diving and you get pounded and eaten up by the waves, it helps you get out there easily. Look at that. Oh, my gosh. Look at you go, girl. That's so cool. We've seen a stud walking around the hall. That's my hubby. Get a shot of him. You tell me now he's a youth pastor? Wait a minute. Is this guy perfect or what? Perfect for me. We met through friends kind of on a blind date and just hit it off and just developed a good friendship. And now it's just amazing to be able to share life together and teamwork and have a lot of the same values, yeah. You think he inspired you to get back in the water, stay competing. What does he say to you? Well, what I appreciate about Adam is we are like workout buddies and we motivate each other to stay fit and stay active, which I think is essential for everyone, to have someone to work out together. We go surfing together. You know, I give him little tips because he is on Kansas and he's new to surfing but just having his support, it's really sfoeshl have him there when I won and my dad was there too. Yeah. It definitely makes a difference having the core support. You could not have written this book after the accident, right? Just taking time to sort of get these thoughts together and be able to speak to people. Yeah. So I lost my arm when I was 13. At that age you're not thinking about your health and your fitness as much. I think nowadays you almost should start thinking at a young age and that's when you develop habits and they can either be good or bad. So my hope with body and soul just to encourage young girls in the choices that they make in the way they eat, in the way that they move, finding activities that they enjoy and not working toward being the best surfer in the world, but things that they love do in their daily life and doing it with friends. We have a lot of fun recipes. I know. The recipes in there are good. Yeah. And they're healthy an friendly to someone who's new to eating healthy and kind of ease their way into it. Your beautiful life secrets. Surfing for you, this is number one. Yeah. These are what make me feel beautiful. When I come in from a good surf, I just feel good about myself. And eating healthy especially and outdoor exercise. Of course, working out in the gym is awesome, but I like to have a variety and get outside too. And then laughing. I love laughing. And, of course, my husband. I wouldn't be married to him if I didn't feel beautiful. How did he propose to you? It was perfect. It was a private beach and behind there's botanical gardens. Yeah, he just took me back there and shared his heart to me, and -- yeah, I said yes. You're so cute. You're so cute. This is a sunshine kind of day. I know. You're breathing sunshine into our lives as you sit here. Thank you so much. All right. Good stuff. "Body and soul: A girl's guide to fitness and fun" in stores. Still to come.
