overview
Taylor Daniel Lautner, who is best known for the role of Jacob Black in the hugely successful Twilight, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 11, 1992. By the age of six, Taylor was studying martial arts and by seven was already placing first in karate competitions. By the time he was eight, he has won his first three championship medals, and decided to try acting. When he was nine, he auditioned for his first role, a television commercial, and liked it so much he began trying out regularly.
While pursuing acting, in 2001 Taylor earned top honors at the World Karate Association. In addition, he learned jazz and hip-hop. Taylor landed his first role the same year in the TV-movie “Shadow Fury,” and over the years began appearing on television shows including “The Bernie Mac Show,” “Summerland,” and “My Wife and Kids.” In 2002, his family moved to Los Angeles permanently to support Taylor’s acting.
In 2003, Taylor was cast as Sharkboy, in “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D.” Taylor got to use his martial arts background choreographed all of his fight scenes in the film.
In 2004, Taylor landed the role Eugene Levy’s son in “Cheaper by the Dozen 2.” He also started doing a lot of voice-over work in the animated television shows “Danny Phantom” and “Love, Inc.”
Lautner got his big break in 2008 when he was cast as Jacob Black in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight.” Overnight, Taylor became a teen heartthrob by playing a boy who eventually turns into a werewolf. Although he had to fight to keep the role for the second Twilight film “New Moon,” Taylor met the challenge and gained weight and muscle to retain the bigger role his character will play in the second film.
