BEIJING, China --
As of today, Michael Phelps is now the most decorated Olympian of all time – he holds the most gold medals in history. Oh, and on top of that – he broke two more world records today.
Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush spoke with his teammates and also got a one-on-one interview with Phelps today after he was done racing, and asked him the question on everyone’s mind: “How does it feel?”
“It’s pretty amazing. To compete at the Olympic games and have so many athletes come through here, to be the most decorated, it’s pretty special, pretty special accomplishment,” Phelps responded.
In typical understated Michael Phelps fashion, he continues to not just rewrite the record books, but also obliterate them.
He set a new standard in winning the 200m butterfly in world record time. One hour later he raised the bar. By the time Peter Vanderkaay hit the water in the 800m freestyle relay, the only question that remained was, ‘By how many seconds would the U.S. crush the world record?’
“What kind of teammate is Michael,” Billy asked Peter.
“You know, he’s a team guy, and uh, I’m glad he’s on my team, “ the anchor leg of the relay said, laughing.
The U.S. team beat the world record by over 4 seconds.
And nobody is more proud than Mama (Debbie) Phelps.
“He’s gonna go in there, he’s gonna swim hard, he’s gonna swim fast and he’s gonna come out and say, ‘I’m satisfied with how I swam,” she assured Billy.
“Do you go back, what do you eat? What do you do now? What does the Phelps man do,” Billy just had to know!
The answer? Carb-loading!
“It’s been pretty much pizza and pasta every lunch and dinner for the last 4 or 5 days,” he answered. “So, I’m probably gonna keep on the routine and after that just have some McDonalds.”
Fast food is most likely not on the menu for Natalie Coughlin, who picked up a bronze medal in the 200m IM, to go along with her gold from yesterday in the 100m backstroke. Natalie’s getting married next spring, and wants to tone her body down for the wedding.
“I don’t want my giant back and big muscular arms at my wedding,” she explained to Billy.
“How are you going to do that,” Billy asked her.
“Lots of running and no lifting with my arms,” Natalie replied.
