Tom Hooper Earns Top Directors Guild Prize For ‘King’s Speech,’ Gains Oscar Momentum

Tom Hooper, wins the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2010 award for ‘The King’s Speech’ at the 63rd Annual Directors Guild Of America Awards held at the Kodak Theatre on January 29, 2011, in Hollywood, Calif.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.

Tom Hooper pulled off an upset win Saturday for the top film honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards for his British monarchy tale “The King’s Speech.”

Hooper won out over David Fincher for “The Social Network,” who had been considered the favorite for Hollywood’s main directing prizes, including the Academy Award on February 27.

‘King’s Speech,’ ‘Fighter’ Lead SAG Awards With 4 Nominations Each; Firth In, Wahlberg Out

LOS ANGELES, Calif.

The British monarchy drama “The King’s Speech” and the boxing tale “The Fighter” led the Screen Actors Guild Awards with four nominations each Thursday, among them honors for Colin Firth, Christian Bale and Helena Bonham Carter.

While “The King’s Speech” star Firth was among best-actor nominees, “The Fighter” star Mark Wahlberg missed out in that category. His co-stars Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo all earned supporting nominations, along with Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush for “The King’s Speech.”
