The Carrie Diaries: Showrunner On How Madonna-Influenced Episode Came About
“The Carrie Diaries” continues its Season 1 run tonight on The CW, with a Madonna-themed episode.
Although there are no appearances from the Material Girl, the episode is set around AnnaSophia Robb’s Carrie Bradshaw and Austin Butler’s Sebastian Kydd as the high school couple heads to New York City for a tour party for the 1980s pop queen – and, maybe more.
“For me it’s always been really fun when we can find the current events that were happening around that time to sort of open up the idea,” showrunner Amy B. Harris told a group of reporters last week during a screening of Monday’s new episode, of adding a Madonna-theme to the mix.
“In [Episode] 10, it was the ‘Less Than Zero’ party. We talked about how writers were kind of gods during that time and then when we started talking about well what were the other gods at that time – Madonna,” she continued of how “The Carrie Diaries” settled on tonight’s Madonna influences. “And then we were like, what was she doing at the time and she was launching her ‘Like A Virgin Tour.’ When we saw that we were like, ‘Oh! We know where that story’s going because it sort of dovetails right into [Carrie].”
Tonight’s episode, “A First Time for Everything,” airs at 8/7c on The CW.
