LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- British actor Lennie James is still part of the AMC family, playing Detective Joe Geddes on Sunday night drama “Low Winter Sun,” but would he be open to a return to “The Walking Dead.”
Lennie famously plays Morgan on AMC’s “TWD,” a character who made his first appearance in Season 1, and returned again in Season 3 episode “Clear,” where Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes found his old friend alone, setting up traps for zombies, and a little out of his mind.
“Yeah, sure,” Lennie said, when Access Hollywood asked him if he’d be up for going back at some point. “I’ve had nothing but a good time while I was there and ‘The Walking Dead’ family and Andrew Lincoln and everybody down there have been really good to me and good for me, so of course I’d go back.
“I have a lovely time there and [if] they keep writing me stuff that’s like [what] they’ve done in the past, then who would turn that down,” he added.
Lennie’s big Season 3 return saw him in some dramatic scenes with Andrew, and a deleted scene from “Clear” featuring the two British actors in several intense minutes (with Morgan explaining why he’s still alive, and why he clears) is included in the “Deleted Scenes” portion of “The Walking Dead: The Complete Third Season” (due out on Blu-ray on August 27).
Asked for his memories of filming that episode, Lennie told Access, “It was really exciting.”
“It was one of those where you just — you’re excited by… the potential of the scenes that he’d written,” Lennie said, making reference to the writer of the episode, Scott Gimple, who is now the showrunner for “The Walking Dead” Season 4, currently in production in Atlanta.
“It was a fantastic episode and they’d written some really lovely stuff for me to do. All I had to do really was to step up and try not let anybody down,” he said.
If Morgan re-enters “The Walking Dead” drama, it likely won’t be for a while as Lennie is a main player on “Low Winter Sun,” with fellow British actor Mark Strong. The show, which airs after “Breaking Bad” on Sunday nights, sees the two men playing Detroit Detectives who kill a fellow officer in the pilot (which aired two weeks ago), and are now tasked with solving that very crime they were hoping would stay hidden.
“Our first 10 episodes are about the fallout of that murder, why it was done, why one of them thinks it was done. Why the other one knows it was done and the affect it has on them as people, but also, them as cops, because they’re put in charge of investigating a crime that they’ve committed and the affect it has on the other cops, [and] the underworld of Detroit because the cop they killed is a dirtier cop than them,” he explained.
And Lennie is thankful that his new series, which will air its third episode this Sunday at 10/9c on AMC, has the lead in of the final run of “Breaking Bad.”
“We’re really lucky,” he said. “As a lead in, you can’t ask for anything better and I think it probably shows the faith that the network [has] in what we’ve been doing that they’re giving us such a prestigious lead in,” he said.
