LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Tiger Woods will not play in the 2009 Chevron World Challenge, a tournament that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation, the golfer announced on his Web site on Monday.

“I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week,” Woods said in a statement. “I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I’m very sorry that I can’t be there.”

Last week, Woods sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital after running over a fire hydrant outside his house and striking a tree with his car.

“We support Tiger’s decision and are confident the strong field and excellent course will provide an exciting week of competition at the Chevron World Challenge,” Tiger Woods Foundation President & CEO Greg McLaughlin said in a statement.

According to the statement on Woods’ Web site, he will not participate in any other tournaments this year.

He “will return to action next year,” the post on his site read.

Woods was also set to serve as the host of the Chevron World Challenge.
