Tony Lucca Reveals Why He Chose Adam Levine As His 'Voice' Coach Over Christina Aguilera
Tony Lucca found early success as a star on “The Mickey Mouse Club,” and now, the singer and songwriter is getting his second shot at fame as he joins Team Adam Levine on NBC’s “The Voice.”
“For me, it’s kind of a chance to not only share with people that I was also a part of that bizarre talent pool, but that I’ve put a lot of time in,” Tony told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Tuesday’s Access Hollywood Live, referencing his former co-stars, Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
“This is sort of a story that’s maybe close to 20 years in the making,” he continued. “I’ve been digging in on a career as an independent artist and making records and touring relentlessly. It’s both things, both the past and the present.”
As fans saw recently on “The Voice,” Tony chose to go with Adam – the first “Voice” judge who turned around – instead of his former “Mickey Mouse Club” co-star Christina, who didn’t recognize him.
Tony told Billy and Kit it was nothing personal – he wanted to go with the judge he had the most in common with.
“Aside from ‘The Mickey Mouse Club’ element with Christina, Adam seemed like the most natural fit for me,” Tony said. “I’m a rocker at heart, I’m a guy with a guitar and came up playing a lot of the same venues and clubs that Adam and his band [Maroon 5] did in the early years, so I think there’s a bit of a shorthand that we could develop or easily have, with me being on his team.”
“The Voice” airs on Monday’s at 8/7c on NBC.
