LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

“The Dark Knight” has defended the top spot at the box office for a month straight, but its reign may come to a “Thunder”-ous end this weekend.

Last week’s opening of “Pineapple Express” failed to unseat the latest installment in the Batman franchise, but “Tropic Thunder,” another R-rated action-comedy, could do the trick, members of the star-studded cast told Access Hollywood.

“That what they’re saying,” Jack Black, who plays gassy comedian Jeff “Fats” Portnoy in the film, said. “You don’t want to count your chickens before they’re hatched. Hopefully we will be the first movie to take down ‘Dark Knight,’ though.”

Along with Jack, “Tropic Thunder” – the satiric story of a group of action movie actors who get thrown into a real-life battle — features megawatt stars including Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and a cameo from Tom Cruise.

Still, Jack admitted that beating Batman would be a feat of superheroic proportions.

“That would be quite a feather in the cap. Good way to start off a run,” he said.

Jay Baruchel, who plays the inexperienced young actor Kevin Sandusky, was a little more enthusiastic.

“It’s the funniest movie I’ve ever seen,” he told Access. “I’m like the biggest fan of this movie so now the world gets to enjoy it as much as I have. I’m just excited for everybody to finally see it.”

But will there be enough of “everybody” to take over the box office?

“I think it stands a pretty good chance of doing that,” he said confidently.

And Robert Downey Jr., who plays five-time Oscar-winning Australian method actor Kirk Lazarus, already has one box office smash to his name this summer with “Iron Man,” but he wouldn’t mind another.

“It’s actually just been a really cool summer for movies,” he told Access. “The fact that I’m in a couple of them is great, you know?”
