LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Janet Jackson will kick off the 2009 American Music Awards with a special opening medley, Access Hollywood has learned.
“We’re thrilled about having Janet Jackson open this year’s show,” American Music Awards producer Larry Klein said in a statement to Access “She is an incredibly dynamic performer and I think the audience will be excited to see what she has in store.”
This will mark the fourth time Janet has performed on the American Music Awards, having previously performed “Control” in 1987, “Escapade” in 1990 and “Together Again” in 1998.
She will join other previously announced acts including Whitney Houston (in her first primetime performance since 2004), Rihanna, Green Day, Shakira, Lil Wayne, Mary J. Blige, Keith Urban, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, The Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry and Adam Lambert.
Janet Jackson has earned nine American Music Awards over her career. She won the award for Soul/R&B Single for “Nasty” as well as for Soul/R&B Video Female in 1987. Her hit “Miss You Much” garnered two nods in 1990 for Dance Single and Soul/R&B Single and in 1991 she took home the prizes for Dance Artist, Pop/Rock Female and Soul/R&B Female. Janet Jackson also earned an AMA in 1999 for Soul/R&B Female and in 2002 for Pop/Rock Female.
