24: Live Another Day — Producers & Kiefer Sutherland Explain What’s Next For Jack Bauer & Chloe O’Brian

Fox’s “24” returns in May, and things pick up with Jack Bauer still on the lamb.

“At the end of Season 8, Jack was basically left a fugitive, on the run, and when we pick up four years later, Jack is still a fugitive,” Executive Producer Manny Coto said when AccessHollywood.com asked how the show resumes, during the “24: Live another Day” panel at the Television Critics Association Winter Tour in Pasadena on Monday. “He has disappeared and he has been hunted and he is still hunted as show the begins.”

Coto said Jack will actually be pursued by a new character played by “Chuck” and “Dexter” alumna Yvonne Strahovski.

“What will come into play is a character, who was announced today, played by Yvonne Strahovski, who is a CIA agent who has been on the hunt for Jack Bauer, and the show will open with that dynamic — a CIA agent hunting Jack,” he continued. “In their minds, Jack is not quite Osama Bin Laden, but is a fugitive of high order, someone to be captured, and when Jack reenters the picture… on his own terms, we will learn that he has a mission, whether it’s a good mission or a dark mission, or he’s fighting on the side of good, we don’t know, but this CIA agent is determined to catch him.”

Mary Lynn Rajskub returns to “24” as Chloe O’Brian and Coto explained more about how she fits into this “Live Another Day” storyline.

“As the story progresses, as [Yvonne’s character] comes closer and closer to [Jack], Chloe O’Brian will enter the picture and we will learn that she has also been damaged over these four years and is not the same person we saw,” he said. “She does not work for CTU. She has turned against the government and for want of a better term is… [an Edward] Snowden-type character and Jack and Chloe will be forced into some kind of circumstance for what Jack is after, which is a secret, but that dynamic will launch the series into what will become a large tableau set in London for some pretty crazy events.”

And series star Kiefer Sutherland also hinted at the relationship ahead between his Jack Bauer and Mary Lynn’s Chloe O’Brian.

“At the very beginning of this show, they are actually pitted against each other by virtue of a set of circumstances, so that is a dynamic that Mary Lynn and I get to play that is very exciting,” he said in response to a reporter’s question. “It’s also something that is going to evolve over the course of a show. Any time an actor gets to play something as complex as a past loyalty that is potentially going to be betrayed is – that’s a lot of meat, so it’s a great opportunity for us so a lot of the dynamic of the characters that are coming back have been shifted by virtue of the circumstances with which we start the show.”

Doing “24: Live Another Day,” however, will not affect the possibility of having a “24” feature film.

“The script for the film is very, very different and you know, the film is an ongoing kind of situation,” Kiefer said. “There’s always an opportunity to do that. But literally, [Executive Producer] Howard [Gordon] came up with an idea for a 12-episode run of this, and it was the opportunity that presented itself to us first. It was a fantastic idea and it’s something that we’re very excited about doing and it’s something that we’re really primarily focused on, so if this ends up rebooting the show or causing a film to be made, so be it, but right now we’re very passionately focused on these 12 episodes right now.”

“24: Live Another Day” premiers May 5 at 8 PM ET/PT on Fox.
