Access Investigates: Hollywood-Style Rehab

Promises, Wonderland and Passages are just some of the places stars go to get clean and sober. The question, is do they work?

On “Primetime,” Baldwin admitted he used rehab as a tool.

“There was one rehab I went into that I actually had no interest in staying sober,” he told Billy, Tuesday night. “[I went into that rehab] so I could squash a lot of the things that were going on press-wise about me and try to tell employers that I was indeed employable.”

It was 11 days after Lindsay left Promises in Malibu that she was arrested. Her father Michael, calls that a bad choice.

“The truth [is] she needs to be in teen challenge, a faith based long term program,” Lohan told Billy. “That’s what she needs, not a place that’s going to admit someone because she’s a name and it gives them more credibility.”

Howard Samuels, Director of Wonderland, the facility Lindsay tried in January, helped create Promises 10 years ago.

“Promises is taking heat because it is the place Britney came and went, Lindsay came and went. Is it at all deserving,” Billy asked.

“No, absolutely not. That’s the process of recovery,” Samuels replied. “Addicts and alcoholics are very hardheaded.”

Fact is, government studies show 80 percent of addicts relapse after treatment.

“The issue is not the treatment center,” Samuels explained. “It’s about the willingness of the individual to learn what we’re there to teach and it is the willingness to get somebody sober. It’s not the treatment center. Relapse is part of the recovery process.”

Billy also asked Baldwin about Promises.

“The way that I have understoodit [is] before, they pretty much let you run around,” Baldwin said.

While Lindsay was at Promises, she was allowed breaks. She went hiking, biking, and rollerblading at Venice Beach. She also left the facility to go to the gym, even though Promises has a gym of its own.

“You can leave [a] treatment facility, any residential treatment facility — they can leave whenever they want,” Samuels said. “That’s the key — you only have so much control.”

Bush spoke with Lindsay’s mother, Dina Lohan earlier today and she told Billy she wants her daughter to come home to New York to get help. Baldwin echoed Dina’s wish.

“She needs to be in a controlled environment,” Baldwin said of Lindsay. “It is going to take years for her to get this down and practice at it is not going to in 30 days.”
