Access ‘Week In Geek’ (April 10, 2010)

In the Access Week In Geek, Indiana Jones to saddle up with James Bond, “Smallville” is planning a big finish to its ninth season, and a Green Lantern update sure to please fans…

“Smallville “ Finale Filled With Death & Guests

“Smallville” will be pulling out all the stops in the home stretch of its ninth season on The CW leading up to its May 14 finale. According to Entertainment Weekly, not only will the season closer feature the death of a major character (Lois? Chloe? Zod? Tess?), fans can also look forward to seeing the return of Hawkman, Black Canary, Stargirl, and Cyborg. Last season ended with the shocking death of Jimmy Olsen at the hands of Doomsday (though in a twist, it was revealed to be not the same Jimmy Olsen that grows up to eventually work along side Lois and Clark at the Daily Planet).

Also said to be stepping into the world of the young Superman before the season wraps up: Martian Manhunter, Metallo, Maxwell Lord, Martha Kent and Perry White. Not returning anytime soon though is Lex Luthor. Michael Rosenbaum, who portrayed the villain for seven seasons, recently dispelled any rumors of coming back to the show on his Twitter page.

Harrison Ford To Cowboy Up

Harrison Ford will be once again donning a hat for his next movie role. Though it will not be the iconic fedora for which he is most famous. Rather, Harrison will be taking it back to Wild West Stetson style. Director Jon Favreau confirmed via his Twitter page that Ford would be joining Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde in his follow-up film to “Iron Man 2.” “Please stop asking if Harrison Ford is in Cowboys & Aliens. Okay? He is. Please don’t tell anybody,” Favreau Tweeted. The film is an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, and the title probably is self-explanatory.

“Green Lantern” Will Stay True To His Origins Says Sinestro And Screenwriter

Fans looking forward to “Green Lantern” can rest easy that the film will stay true to its comic book roots. According to screenwriter Marc Guggenheim in an interview with the LA Times’ Hero Complex, changing things up drastically for the big screen was never in the cards.

“Our goal from the outset was to write a movie that was extremely faithful to the comic book and that includes the tone,” Guggenheim revealed. “In other words, it’s not broadly comedic or silly. Nor is it overly dark. It’s very much in keeping with the spirit of the character.”

He was cautious to point out however, that things can always change during production on the set. Guggenheim admitted that the movie’s tone could still differ from the screenplay’s. “Honestly, I can only speak for the tone of the script because the tone of the film is really the province of the director and they’ve only just started production.“

Mark Strong, who played the baddie in “Sherlock Holmes” and can be seen as the main heavy in the forthcoming “Kick Ass,” will be playing Sinestro opposite Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan in the 2011 film.

The actor revealed to USA Today that he would like to see his character retain his signature, classic Hollywood-esque look that was established by the source material. “That widow’s peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven, and Hal Jordan was based on Paul Newman,” he said. “Obviously at the time, whoever was doing the original comics must have looked at them as guys doing very well in the film industry, and based those characters on them. So I would like to do justice to the Sinestro that was conceived for the comic books,” he assured fans.

Strong also teased that Sinestro would be eventually switching allegiances, going from Green Lantern’s teacher to arch enemy in future installments. “Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan’s mentor, slightly suspicious and not sure of him because obviously Hal is the first human being who’s made into a Green Lantern,” Strong said of Sinestro. “He’s certainly very strict and certainly unsure of the wisdom of Hal becoming a Green Lantern. He is a military guy but isn’t immediately bad. It’s the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he’s quite a heroic figure,” he concluded.

Though if anyone introduces himself as Sinestro upfront, could you really be surprised to find out the guy has a touch of evil running through his blood?
