Access Week In Geek: ‘Comic-Con Mania Hits!’

The Access Week In Geek takes a spotlight look at “Another Earth”… Andrew Garfield addresses Comic-Con fans in costume… The first footage from “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Dark Knight Rises” hits the web… Conan O’Brien crashes Comic-Con… Have the Lone Ranger and Tonto found their villain?… And new images from “The Avengers” are revealed…

ANDREW GARFIELD UNMASKS AND THE LIZARD UNLEASHED AT COMIC CON – Only at Comic-Con can a star dress up as the character he plays in a movie and it’s considered going incognito. That’s just what Andrew Garfield did last night at Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” panel when he rushed the stage before the Q&A session in a Halloween-grade Spider-Man costume, unmasked himself, and then gave a heartfelt speech to the fans in attendance. You can read his speech here at Vulture.

Additionally, the first look at Spider-Man’s nemesis in the film, The Lizard, was revealed at the panel. The evil incarnation of Dr. Curt Connors (played by Rhys Ifans) will be a CGI-heavy creation that ditches the lanky lizard-in-a-lab-coat look for a menacing bulked up Hulk-esque creature.

You can check out the trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” which promises a grittier take on the web slinger.

The film stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Connors/The Lizard.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” swings into theatres in 3D on July 3, 2012

NEW “AVENGERS” IMAGES REVEALED – Check out the new teaser poster for Marvel Studios’ epic team-up film “The Avengers,” that promises to have Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) fighting side by side on the big screen.

In addition, another Comic-Con related reveal are some concept images of the updated looks for the team members in the film, including Captain America in his modern day suit, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Black Widow.

And straight from the Comic-Con floor, a sneak peak at the real life costume Chris Evans will wear as Captain America!

CONAN O’BRIEN CRASHES COMIC-CON – While the “Conan the Barbarian” reboot movie starring “Game Of Thrones” muscle man Jason Momoa indeed has a presence at Comic-Con, the other Conan, as in O’Brien, crashed the panel for “Green Lantern: The Animated Series.” The late night funny man had a spoof trailer to show the fans featuring his animated alter ego, The Flaming C. He created the character in a segment on his TBS show with animation icon Bruce Timm during a visit to the WB Animation studio.

“MAN OF STEEL” FLIES TO SUMMER 2013 – Superman fans will have to wait a little longer to see a big screen adventure for the iconic DC Comic hero. Warner Bros. announced that the upcoming “Man of Steel,” with Henry Cavill set to star, will now hit theatres on June 14, 2013 (pushed from a previously tentative release in December 2012).

HUGH JACKMAN REVEALS HIS ADVERSARY IN “THE WOLVERINE” – “Script is done for ‘The Wolverine,’ I’m literally this afternoon going to be meeting up with the director, James Mangold,” Hugh Jackman told Access Hollywood at Comic Con. “And we are shooting in October,” the Aussie confirmed. “Very excited about it.”

He also revealed during a Q&A for his upcoming film “Real Steel” who the villain in the stand-alone adventure for the popular Marvel Mutant will be. “I’ll fight the Silver Samurai in it, so that should be exciting. Most of the filming will take place in Japan.”

WEEK IN GEEK MOVIE PICK: “ANOTHER EARTH” – Sneaking into New York and Los Angeles theatres this weekend (in between the big crowd pleasing summer releases “Captain America” and “Friends With Benefits”) is “Another Earth,” an eerie film that was the talk of Sundance starring William Mapother (John) and Brit Marling (Rhoda). It is a film that will draw you in from the start.

When a mysterious planet (defying all theories of traditional physics), is detected approaching Earth’s orbit, a composer and aspiring astrophysicist become linked through tragedy, and four years later find their lives intertwined again. Dubbed Earth 2, this strange world is revealed to be a mirror image of our own and raises the possibility of a parallel version of oneself existing somewhere else. You also find yourself asking if life could have been different through the slightest variation of one’s own actions.

Mike Cahill, who directed, produced, co-wrote, shot, and edited “Another Earth,” delivers a raw film that is arresting, thought provoking, and haunting. Brit Marling, who shines with heartbreak on screen as Rhoda, co-wrote and co-produced with Cahill.

If you want to catch a unique film that will leave you in a state of wonder by the end, this would be your weekend pick.

“DARK KNIGHT RISES” SNEAK PEEK HITS THE WEB – The long awaited first glimpse of “The Dark Knight Rises” went viral this week.

The third and final film featuring Christian Bale as Batman also stars Tom Hardy (“Inception”) as Bane. The British actor was tight-lipped regarding details of the film and his character when Access Hollywood caught up with him at Comic-Con while promoting his latest film, “Warrior.”

The bulked-up masked villain is finally seen in quick imposing glimpses, including the final shot where he is charging what appears to be a badly beaten and battered Batman. In the comic book storyline “Knightfall,” Bane picks up Batman and breaks his back over his knee. Online speculation rages on whether the movie’s script will incorporate that plot point. “The Dark Knight Rises” is scheduled to hit theatres July 20, 2012.

ANGRY APES TAKE CHARGE – Fandango has a kick-ass reel of FX laden footage from 20th Century Fox’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” starring James Franco, Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis (as Caesar) and hits theatres on August 5th.

THE “LONE RANGER” CAST EXPANDSVariety reports that Dwight Yoakam is on the radar to play Butch Cavendish, lead villain to Armie Hammer’s Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp’s Tonto. Also in talks to join the Disney film are Helena Bonham Carter (as a brothel madam) and Barry Pepper (as leader of the Seventh Cavalry).
