Adam Levine Talks Making Tony Lucca Sing Britney Spears On ‘The Voice’: It Was ‘So Wrong That It Worked’

In what seemed an obvious retort to Christina Aguilera’s recent harsh critique of Tony Lucca on “The Voice,” the former “Mickey Mouse Club” star performed fellow Mousekeeter Britney Spears’ first hit, “…Baby One More Time,” on Monday night’s show.

Though Tony, 36, had hoped to steer clear of his Mouse House days, coach Adam Levine urged him to take the risk with Britney’s hit — and the bold move paid off, as he was voted through to the next round of competition by America.

“That was a volatile situation,” Adam told Access Hollywood of his daring song choice for Tony at “The Voice” following Tuesday’s elimination show. “That was definitely potentially a nightmare, but it was a risk and I talked a lot about, [I] was telling [my team] about risks and how you gotta take them to kind of get anywhere — it has to feel a little scary.

“You can’t do the right thing every time,” he added. “You have to spike in some of the wrong and it was just so wrong that it worked.”

Adam, who coached his team to victory last season with Season 1 winner Javier Colon, said he’s thrilled his plan for Tony seemed to pay off.

“I told him to have faith in me as a coach, and he did and he’s super cool,” he told Access. “I’m really happy that he’s finally flourishing.”

As for Christina’s suggestion that she, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Tony Lucca reunite on “The Voice” stage, Adam said he’d be all for it.

“I’m always for reunions. I’m a nostalgic person so I like reunions,” he said. “Yeah, I would be down for that.”

“The Voice” returns to kick off the semi-finals on Monday at 8/7c on NBC.
