‘Akeelah’ Wins Big At 2006 Black Movie Awards

ATLANTA (October 17, 2006) — It was a big night for “Akeelah and the Bee” at the 2006 Black Movie Awards.

The movie ended up with four awards, including Outstanding Motion Picture of the Year. The film also won honors for its child star, Keke Palmer, for outstanding actress in a lead role. Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett won similar awards for their supporting roles in the movie.

Tape of the ceremony over the weekend in Los Angeles will air tomorrow night on TNT.

Also during the ceremony, Ruby Dee presented the Ossie Davis Humanitarian Award to Spike Lee. The director got the honor for his work on the HBO documentary, “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts,” a look at the effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans.
