Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu Weighs In On Sean Penn’s Oscar Joke

Sean Penn raised eyebrows with a joke while announcing the Oscar for Best Picture for “Birdman” on Sunday, but what did the film’s director think about it?

Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson spoke with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who also won the Oscar for Best Director, about Sean saying, “Who gave this son of a bitch a green card?”

“I felt it was a very funny joke,” Alejandro said. “I’m a friend of Sean Penn’s for 10 years. We have a very, very long… friendship.”

In fact, the director has thrown a few verbal jabs at the actor in the past.

“We are brutal with each other, we play hard,” the filmmaker, who was born in Mexico, continued. “I have played very hard jokes on him. We have this kind of relationship.”

Adding, “I didn’t find it offensive.”

The director was quick to point out that Sean’s comment does not reflect who he is or his work.

“What he’s doing in Haiti [and with human rights issues] and all those things prove what kind of person he is,” Alejandro told Shaun.
