Alexa Ray Joel Fights Back

Go ahead, you can say it? Alexa Ray Joel is a chip off the old block.

The daughter of Billy Joel and former supermodel Christie Brinkley is now a charming and creative 21-year-old getting a dose of the harsh side of fame.

And now, she’s firing back, taking on celebrity blogger Perez Hilton after he insulted her looks.

“I don’t think it’s acceptable to degrade people and make a business out of hatred,” Alexa told Access Hollywood’s Tony Potts. “I didn’t want to say nothing because I’m not about pretending that’s fine.”

On her MySpace page, Alexa took aim saying, “I’m just so over being compared to my mom. I’m happy to have a lot of my father’s features,” adding, “Why would 6 million people be on a site that does nothing but exploit, objectify, ridicule, and degrade public figures for no reason?”

But when she sat down withTony before her gig at the Viper Room, Alexa said she wants the feud to end.

“Did it come naturally, what you said?” Tony asked Alexa.

“To be honest with you, I didn’t know it was going to turn into a thing,” she said. “I don’t want to turn it away from the music.”

As a singer/songwriter, Alexa has followed in her famous father’s footsteps – at least to some extent.

“My dad writes on the piano but I actually write in my head,” she revealed. “It’s really funny because my dad’s like, ‘How can you not write on the piano?’ The piano is his thing.”

Hey, after all he is the Piano Man and it’s a lot to live up to. Think about it – how many people have parents who are both icons and in different fields.

In fact, Alexa does feel the pressure to live up to their reputations.

“My mom is not just a supermodel, but a woman with class. My dad is obviously very credible in his field,” she continued. “I have moments when I freak out when I think about it that way.”

Despite the pressure, Alexa has paved her own way.

Right now, she’s touring and performing songs from her new EP “Sketches.”

“What about playing for the first time live at a gig in front of your father?” Tony asked.

“It’s actually pretty relaxing in a weird way because he’s so laid back. He always laughs at the gigs. He’s like, ‘She’s good.’ It’s funny,” she revealed. “My mom, on the other hand, is like front and center with the camera.”

Clearly, the seal of approval from dad. But that doesn’t stop him from giving some fatherly advice.

“He always says stay true to your heart, treat your songs like they’re your babies and protect them,” Alexa smiled.
