The “American Idol” judges were blown away by contestant Candice Glover’s moving performance of The Cure’s “Lovesong” on Wednesday night’s show.
Randy Jackson dubbed it one of the greatest performances in “Idol” history – a comment that sent Candice over the edge.
“Randy’s been on the show for 12 years, so he’s come across like, amazing talent and for him to say that, I think that’s when I started crying,” Candice told AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman following the show on Wednesday. “I don’t know — I just kind of went off into this alternate universe. I could not take it in.”
Adding, “I’ve been here three years — this is my third year — and for him to acknowledge that growth and that I persevered and I’m not giving up and I’m showing the world what I have, it felt phenomenal and I just broke down. I was so overwhelmed.”
Mariah Carey was so moved by Candice’s performance that she made her way to the stage to toss glitter on her.
“She threw glitter like at me! I was like, ‘Oh…?’ Like, I didn’t know what was going on, I was surprised,” she said. “I didn’t know what to do.
“But that’s an honor if Mariah gets up out of her seat to come on the stage and toss glitter,” she added.
And Candice wasn’t the only one crying. Backstage, a number of the female contestants were moved to tears by her performance as well.
“We talked about this the other day — it doesn’t matter at this who wins,” she said, of how the girls support each other. “We all appreciate each other and we all love each other. No matter who wins, it’s not even like a competition, it’s like family.”
Adding, “We just happen to be singing on a show together.”
