America’s Got Talent Contestant Timothy Poe Admits to Lying About Military Honors

“America’s Got Talent” contestant Timothy Poe made headlines this week when the details about the injuries he sustained in the line of duty were called in to question.

On Wednesday, the singer – who performed Garth Brooks’ song “If Tomorrow Never Comes” this week on “AGT” – admitted to being unsure about all the details he shared on the show about his injuries while serving. He also admitted to lying about receiving a purple heart and a bronze star.

“It may not have happened exactly how I explained because I don’t remember a whole bunch,” Poe said during a podcast with the “You Served” [organization?] “It was a, it was a show. Ya know?”

He was also asked about telling the Defenders of Freedom organization about being honored for his service.

“Do you have a purple heart and a bronze star?” he was asked on the podcast.

“No, I don’t,” he said. “It was just something stupid… I don’t. And I never said that on ‘America’s Got Talent’ that I did.”

A spokesperson for the Brooke Army Medical Center confirmed to Access Hollywood that Poe was treated there from September 2009 to May 2011, but could not discuss the nature of his treatment due to patient confidentiality.

A rep for NBC had no comment when contacted by Access.

As previously reported on Access Hollywood, a spokesman for the Minnesota National Guard questioned the details of Poe’s story that he shared on his “AGT” appearance.

“Sgt. Poe’s official military records do not indicate that he was injured by a grenade in combat while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, as he reports,” Lt. Col. Kevin Olson, Spokesman for the Minnesota National Guard said in a statement to Access Hollywood on Wednesday. “The Minnesota National Guard can also confirm that he was not awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds sustained in combat.”
