Angelina Jolie On Why Shiloh Turned Down ‘Maleficent’ Role, Working With Vivienne

Angelina Jolie’s “Maleficent” is a family affair.

In addition to starring the Oscar-winner as Maleficent, her daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, plays a young Aurora (Elle Fanning’s character). But, even though she too was offered a role – Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, Vivienne’s older sister, declined an appearance in the Disney feature film.

“We knew she would,” Angelina told Access Hollywood’s Liz Hernandez on the blue carpet at the “Maleficent” Hollywood premiere on Wednesday. “We mentioned the idea of playing a princess and she obviously thought it was very funny. She’s not that kind of girl.”

As for Vivienne, she took to her role naturally, and even ad-libbed a line.

“That’s just Vivienne. We call her my shadow. She’s a very… she’s a wonderfully affectionate, very much a mommy’s girl and so it was a natural fit. It was very easy and very fun to do,” Angelina said.

Angelina, Brad and their brood all attended last night’s Hollywood premiere of “Maleficent” in what was a unique family first.

“It’s the first time all six of them are with me at one of these things, so they all got dressed up. It’s very sweet,” Angelina said.

In the film, Angelina plays Maleficent, and theater-goers will find out why her character became so evil in this origin story from Disney. Angelina is also an Executive Producer on the film, and she told Liz how she balanced her two jobs – actress and producer.

“I love this character,” Angelina said of the role. “I’m really an actress in this one more than producer and all that. I did my best to participate where I could, but we did it as a team and Linda [Woolverton] wrote a beautiful script and I just tried to do my best to give everybody what they expect from her, ‘cause I certainly loved her when I was a kid and I didn’t want to disappoint the fans and I figured if I was having fun, they’d have fun. So I hope people have a good time when they see the film.”
