Angelina Unplugged: The Joy Of Being A Parent With Brad

May 10, 2007 — Angelina Jolie gave a rare and revealing interview with Reader’s Digest magazine, on newsstands May 22. In the article, Angelina says she and Brad will not marry! And as for her four children — Maddox, 5; Zahara, 2; 3 year-old Pax and baby Shiloh — they aren’t enough. She and Brad want more — both adopted and biological.

“I met this amazing person,” she said of Brad in the interview, “who in spending a lot of time talking realized we had very, very similar views on family, views on how we wanted to live our lives…, you know, where we were — just very, very similar.” She adds, “I discovered a man who’s extremely thoughtful, intelligent and invested in many issues. He’s just more quiet in his way. I think that’s the reason I love him.”

And so began Angelina’s romance with Brad Pitt. “You know, it took me by surprise,” she said. “And it’s all happened very quickly with so many children.”

31 year-old Angelina put rumors to rest about her pregnancy with Shiloh, saying the pregnancy was no surprise — but carefully planned:

“Before I met Brad, I always said I was happy never to have a child biologically. He told me he hadn’t given up that thought. Then, a few months after [Zahara] came home, I saw Brad with her and [Maddox], and I realized how much he loved them — that a biological child would not in any way be a threat. So I said, ‘I want to try.’”

With four children, romantic weekends are out for the couple, but they still manage to have romantic time together, albeit it limited (and strategically planned).

“We’ll get them occupied with a movie and popcorn and try to run off and lock the door for a bit,” she shared.

Angelina spoke of the joy the children bring to her and Brad on a daily basis:

“Yesterday, we picked up the kids from school, and he turned around in the car and they were all three of them in a row. And I was sitting in the back, because our translator was in the front with him. And he looked back and just couldn’t stop laughing, you know. And that was even missing Shiloh, because she was home?we love them and we’re having a great time!”

Along with the happiness she feels for her children, Angelina feels a bit of sadness as well. She’s still mourning the loss of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died of cancer in January.

“I’m one of those people who walk around as if it’s fine,” she said, “and then suddenly I don’t know why I’m crying over my breakfast. My mother was my best friend. I’m so grateful I had her as a mom.”

And while she’s careful about what she does, Angelina is determined to live a full life for herself so she can be the best mother she can be.

“I don’t do drugs. I don’t intentionally ride a motorcycle without a helmet. I will always be careful. But I live a bold life, and I’m a happy mother because of that.”
