Anne Hathaway On Worrying Her Les Miserables Director With Her Weight Loss; Reveals Acting Insecurities

There has been much talk about Anne Hathaway’s weight loss to play the prostitute Fantine in “Les Miserables,” including when the film was being made by director Tom Hooper.

“To be honest, I thought she was going further than she should, and I tried to discourage her,” he told the Los Angeles Times, about Anne’s weight loss of 25 pounds.

The actress said losing so much weight from her regularly slender frame prompted a concerned reaction on the set of the movie musical.

“Tom didn’t like what I was doing, but he understood why I was doing it,” the actress told the Los Angeles Times, in a new interview. “No one liked what I was doing. By the end, people were hugging me and they would get emotional because I felt so frail.”

At the junket for the film in early December, Anne wouldn’t talk about how she lost the weight, but she did share with Access Hollywood’s Michelle Beadle a description of her first post-shooting meal.

“I had spelt pasta with garlic oil and like a lot of beautiful fresh tomatoes and then I had a twice baked potato, with basil, sun dried tomatoes [and] oil. It was so good,” she raved at the time.

Anne clearly put a lot of pressure on herself to fit into the vision she had for Fantine, but despite the accolades — like nominations for both a Screen Actors Guild award and Golden Globe award for playing Fantine in “Les Miserables” — Anne admitted she wants to be better.

“I see the sort of work that people like Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet can do, and I want to do that level of work so badly,” she told the Times. “But I don’t believe I’m as gifted as them. So the only thing I can control is how hard I work at it.”
