‘Annie’: Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne Reveal Singing Nerves

Singing comes with the territory when signing on to star in “Annie.”

The musical is responsible for hits that span generations, such as “Tomorrow” and “It’s A Hard-Knock Life.”

Cameron Diaz gave audiences a first listen to her singing chops in “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” but her voice has come a long to take on the role of “Annie’s” Miss Hannigan.

“The truth is, is that to sing that bad, you have to be able to sing just good enough, right?” Cameron rationalized at the film’s NYC premiere on Sunday. “But, I had wonderful professionals and teachers to help me get the voice that you hear on screen, so I feel very grateful to them.”

Co-star Rose Byrne echoed Cameron’s sentiment on vocal coaching.

“I can do a little karaoke, but we had a lot of training and great people around us, so hopefully it will be okay,” Rose told Access Hollywood. “It was so fun. It was such a fun job.

“I think it’s actually liberating and there’s a certain point where it’s very joyous. Music is joy,” she continued. “It’s wonderful, so on set when we’d be freezing, all of a sudden we’d be doing a singing number and everyone would be forgetting about it. We’d just be lifted up by the music.”

Jamie Foxx, who’s had radio hits such as “Blame It,” gave the ladies due credit for stepping outside their comfort zone.

“They talk about the nerves and I see the film and see how great they pulled it off and within the character it was amazing,” Jamie told Access Hollywood‘s Shaun Robinson at the junket on December 4.

Eleven-year-old “Annie” top-liner Quvenzhane Wallis is never fully dressed without a smile on the red carpet, and she said she had her own singing nerves to address.

“I liked to sing with my brothers and my sister, but it wasn’t something that I kinda wanted to go with, but then I wanted to play Annie and now I like singing,” Quvenzhane confessed.

“Annie” comes out in theaters on December 19.
