Antonio Banderas: ‘So Proud’ Of ‘Fifty Shades’ Star Dakota Johnson

Antonio Banderas told Access Hollywood he is “so proud” of his stepdaughter Dakota Johnson, who stars in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” film.

“I got into the life of the girl when she was four-years-old and just to see her now, I’m so proud of her,” he told Access on Friday at the press junket for “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.” “She knows very well what this career is all about. She has seen it in her father, in her mother and I suppose me too, [and in her] grandmother, so she [has] a tradition in Hollywood.”

Antonio became Dakota’s stepfather when he wed her mother, Melanie Griffith, in 1996. The couple announced in June 2014 that they had filed for divorce. (Dakota is the daughter of Melanie and Don Johnson.)

While he’s proud of her, the “SpongeBob Movie” star told Access he doesn’t plan to race to the theater to see Dakota as Anastasia Steele in the racy “Fifty Shades” when it is released on Valentine’s Day.

“I don’t think so. I probably will wait a little bit,” he revealed to Access.

Antonio also told Access he still treasures the fond memories he made with ex-wife Melanie during their two decades together.

“I’m not going to take 20 years of my life and put it in a hole,” he told Access. “There are beautiful things there that I’m gonna keep. It’s part of my life.”

Antonio plays the villainous Burger-Beard in the new “SpongeBob” film, which he called “an international phenomenon.”

“Villains normally are fun to play. They [have] got more colors [and] are more complex,” he told Access. “A villain like this is a villain and is also a clumsy character.”
